amiibo is Nintendo's wireless communications and storage protocol. They're used for Toy-to-Life elements in certain games on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U platforms. It was launched in November 2014 in the form of system software updates and a series of figurines known as amiibo. These figurines use near field communication (NFC) to interact with supported video games, potentially allowing data to be transferred in and out of games and across multiple platforms.

Support[]

There are considered two kinds of compatibility for the amiibo: read/write allows the game to access the amiibo's NFC tag and store data while read only doesn't allow the game to store data. This latter option is used to unlock additional content in the game. While most of the toys corresponds to a specific game, there are some that can be used on multiple games. However, each amiibo toy can only store data from one compatible game at a time, meaning data must be deleted from the toy in order to use it with a different title. Existing Wii U and 3DS games can receive updates that enable them to recognize amiibo toys. The toys can be used directly with the Wii U GamePad and New Nintendo 3DS series, while there was an adapter released for the rest of the Nintendo 3DS series.
